There is no invoice for a Formula 1 car. No team has ever walked into a showroom, and no manufacturer has ever printed a price list. The car is designed, built, crashed, rebuilt, and developed continuously across a season by the team that races it — which makes the question of what one costs both perfectly reasonable and surprisingly slippery.
The accepted answer, assembling the major components at something like their real value, lands between $12 million and $20 million for a single complete car. That figure excludes the design and development work that produced it, which is where most of a team’s money actually goes.
So the honest way to answer the question is to walk through the car piece by piece, then look at the rule that now caps the whole exercise.
The power unit: the single biggest line item
The hybrid power unit — the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 with its energy-recovery systems — is the most expensive thing bolted to the car, generally valued at $10 million or more. Customer teams do not buy engines outright; they lease a season’s supply from a manufacturer for a fee in the tens of millions, with the FIA regulating the maximum price to keep the smaller teams solvent.
The complexity justifies the number. These are the most thermally efficient racing engines ever built, converting more than half their fuel energy into motion, and the manufacturers spent sums in the hundreds of millions developing them.
The chassis and survival cell
The carbon-fiber monocoque — the survival cell the driver sits in — runs to roughly $700,000 to $1 million per tub, and teams build several per season. The gearbox, an eight-speed semi-automatic unit that must survive multiple race weekends under regulation, is commonly valued between $400,000 and $600,000. The halo, the titanium hoop above the cockpit, is one of the cheaper safety items at under $20,000, which may be the best money in motorsport.
Wings, wheels, and the consumables
The front wing is the car’s most fragile expensive object: $150,000 to $300,000 of sculpted carbon fiber, shaped by the aerodynamics of an F1 car, that can be destroyed by a moment’s contact at the first corner. Rear wings cost a similar order. A single set of Pirelli tires is valued at around $2,700 to $3,000 — though teams do not buy them per set; they pay a season-long supply arrangement and return every tire after the weekend.
Then there is the steering wheel, which deserves its own museum case: a carbon-and-titanium computer with around 25 controls, valued between $50,000 and $100,000. What all those buttons actually do is a story in itself.

The cost cap changed the whole question
Until 2021, the real answer to “how much does an F1 car cost” was “as much as the team has.” The big teams spent over $400 million a year; the small ones spent a quarter of that and finished where you would expect.
The financial regulations introduced in 2021 capped most team spending — initially at $145 million, stepping down to the $135 million level that defines the current era, adjusted for inflation and calendar length. Crucially, the cap excludes driver salaries, the three highest-paid staff, marketing, and engine development. What the drivers themselves earn sits entirely outside it, which is why star salaries kept climbing while wind-tunnel budgets froze.
The competitive effect has been real: midfield teams now operate within sight of the front-runners’ budgets, and a crash bill genuinely hurts everyone equally.

What a crash actually costs
Under the cap, accident damage stopped being an annoyance and became a strategic problem. A heavy crash can write off a front wing, floor, gearbox, and suspension in one motion — a bill that can reach seven figures — and every dollar of it comes out of the same capped pot that funds development. Teams now track “crash spend” the way they track aerodynamic upgrades, and a driver having a clumsy season is, quite literally, slowing the car’s development.
The same arithmetic governs spares. A team travels with enough inventory to rebuild both cars more than once — noses, floors, suspension assemblies, complete gearboxes — and every item in those flight cases was manufactured against the cap. The freight alone, moved to more than twenty countries a year, is a budget line that would fund a respectable junior racing team outright.
Can you actually buy one?
Old ones, yes. Historic Grand Prix cars trade at auction for anything from the high six figures to tens of millions for championship-winning machinery with the right name in the logbook. Current cars never reach the market while competitive; the intellectual property in the floor alone is worth more than the carbon it is cut from. If the idea appeals, the realities of buying and running an F1 car deserve a separate, sobering read.
