The 6-Wheel Formula 1 Car: Tyrrell P34’s Beautiful Madness

When the covers came off the Tyrrell P34 in late 1975, seasoned journalists assumed it was a joke. The car in front of them had six wheels: two of normal size at the rear, and four tiny ten-inch wheels paired up at the front, peering out from behind the bodywork like something sketched by a child with an expensive set of pencils. Tyrrell was a championship-winning team, not a stunt operation, and yet here it was.

It was not a joke. The P34 raced for two full seasons, took podiums, and at Anderstorp in 1976 delivered the only grand prix victory ever achieved by a six-wheeled car, a one-two finish, no less. Then it faded, killed not by its concept but by a tire supplier’s ledger, and the rulebook eventually closed the door behind it.

Half a century on, the P34 remains the most beloved oddity in Formula 1 history, a car that asks a permanently interesting question: what if the most basic assumption about a racing car, four wheels, was just a habit?

The logic of six wheels

Designer Derek Gardner’s reasoning was cold and sound. In the mid-1970s, front wheels were a serious aerodynamic problem: large rotating cylinders sitting in clean airflow, generating drag and turbulence that held back how fast the car could go and polluted everything behind them. Gardner’s insight was that four small front wheels could hide almost entirely behind the front wing, slashing drag, while their combined contact patch matched or exceeded that of two conventional tires.

The claimed benefits stacked up neatly.

  • Less drag, because the ten-inch wheels sat in the wing’s aerodynamic shadow rather than the airstream.
  • More mechanical grip, from a larger total front contact patch spread across four tires.
  • More braking power, with four front discs sharing the work where most braking load lives.
  • A safety margin, since a single front puncture left three wheels still steering the car.

It was, in essence, an aerodynamicist’s solution to a mechanical problem, arrived at years before F1 aerodynamics became the sport’s dominant science. The execution was harder: four uprights, four brakes, and a steering system connecting tandem axles, with small portholes cut into the cockpit sides so the driver could see the front tires at work.

Anderstorp, 1976: the day it worked

The P34 made its race debut during the 1976 season with Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler driving, and it was quickly clear the car was no novelty. The proof arrived at the Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp. Scheckter took pole, controlled the race, and won; Depailler followed him home for a Tyrrell one-two. A six-wheeled car had beaten the best of Ferrari, McLaren, and Lotus on merit.

Nor was Sweden a fluke of circumstance. Across 1976 the P34 was a regular podium visitor, and Scheckter finished third in the world championship. For one season, the strangest car on the grid was also one of the four or five best, a combination the sport has never quite repeated. Scheckter himself remained famously skeptical of the concept even while driving it; the results argued back.

Why the experiment died

The P34’s fatal flaw was not on the car. It was at Goodyear. The four front tires were a bespoke ten-inch size used by exactly one team, and while Goodyear poured development into the standard sizes raced by everyone else, the small fronts stood still. Through 1977 the rest of the grid’s rubber improved race by race; the P34’s front tires did not.

The consequences compounded. The revised 1977 car grew heavier and wider, and the front tires, starved of development, became the limit of the package, overheating and giving away the very grip they were meant to add. The results curve bent downward, and at the end of 1977 Tyrrell returned, without ceremony, to four wheels.

It is one of the cleanest cautionary tales in racing: a sound concept can be killed entirely by its supply chain. The P34 did not fail as an idea. It failed as a customer.

The six-wheelers that never raced

The idea refused to die quietly. March sketched a 2-4-0 concept with four driven rear wheels, reasoning that traction, not steering, was where extra rubber would pay. Most tantalizing of all, Williams built and tested a six-wheeled development car with twin rear axles in the early 1980s, and testing suggested the concept had real pace in the ground-effect era that would later shape the fastest F1 cars ever built.

The governing body saw where this was heading. Regulations were amended for 1983 to require exactly four wheels, ending the six-wheel era by decree before a second team could race one. The P34 was left as both the pioneer and the entire history of its species.

A monument to asking why not

The P34’s afterlife says as much as its racing record. Restored examples headline historic events and draw crowds that ignore far more successful machinery, and the car remains a fixture among collectors of F1 model cars, where its silhouette is instantly recognizable in a way no conventional 1976 car can claim. Even among the greatest drivers in the sport’s history, few are associated with anything so singular as Scheckter and that car.

Modern Formula 1, tightly specified and simulation-driven, could never produce a P34, which is precisely why it matters. It stands for the version of the sport where a designer could stare at a rulebook, notice that nobody had said four wheels, and build the question. For one Sunday in Sweden, the answer was yes.
