The story of George Russell

George Russell, from King’s Lynn in England, won the GP3 title in 2017 and the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2018, both as a rookie, before joining Williams in 2019 as part of the Mercedes junior programme. Three seasons in an uncompetitive car showcased his qualifying brilliance, and a standout stand-in performance for Mercedes at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix — where he was on course to win before misfortune intervened — confirmed his potential.

Promoted to the works Mercedes team in 2022, Russell out-scored seven-time champion Hamilton in their first year together and took his maiden victory at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix. He has since matured into Mercedes’ team leader, adding further wins and poles.

In 2026 he spearheads Mercedes alongside rising star Kimi Antonelli, having opened the season with victory in Australia.
