The current benchmark stands at 1.80 seconds, set by McLaren at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.
It is tempting to call this a miracle of athleticism, and the people involved are certainly athletes. But the fastest pitstop in Formula 1 is better understood as a piece of choreography that has been rehearsed until the variation between attempts is measured in hundredths. Around twenty people touch the car or stand ready to. None of them sees the whole stop. Each sees only their own square meter of it.

The record book
For most of the sport’s history, pit stops were leisurely affairs — refueling, introduced and later abandoned, once stretched stops past seven seconds as a matter of course. When refueling left F1 after 2009, the stop became a pure tire change, and the timing war began in earnest. Red Bull dominated that war for a decade. Then McLaren took the record outright.

Anatomy of a two-second stop
The stop begins before the car arrives. The crew is in position, guns spinning at idle, tires held at the angle of approach. The driver hits a marks board at the pit speed limiter — pit lanes are capped at 80 km/h, a rare moment of legislated calm for machines that routinely pass 340 km/h — and stops on a painted target within a few centimeters.
From there, in round numbers:
- 0.0 s — front and rear jacks lift the car; wheel guns are already on the nuts
- 0.3 s — all four nuts off; old wheels coming away
- 0.8 s — new wheels going on
- 1.4 s — nuts tight; gun operators signal OK
- 1.8 s — jacks drop, lights go green, the driver is already at full throttle
Each wheel has a single central nut, designed to be removed and refitted in one continuous motion. The gun operator does not look at the nut; the hands know where it is.
Twenty people, one square meter each
The standard crew breaks down with bureaucratic neatness: three people per corner — gunner, wheel-off, wheel-on — which accounts for twelve. Add front and rear jack operators, two stabilizers steadying the car at mid-wing, crew for front wing adjustments, and the person on the gantry or traffic-light system who releases the car. Several more stand ready for a damaged nose or a visor tear-off.
These are mechanics first; the pit stop is an additional duty rather than a full-time job, which is part of what makes what F1 pit crews are paid such an interesting question. They train like a sprint relay squad — gym work, reaction drills, and hundreds of practice stops per season, many of them filmed and reviewed frame by frame.
The equipment arms race
The wheel gun is the unglamorous hero. Powered by compressed air or nitrogen, a modern F1 gun spins the nut off in around a tenth of a second and reports torque electronically — one more line item in what a Formula 1 car costs. The release decision has migrated from a human with a lollipop sign to sensor-driven light systems, with a human override layered back in after the sport learned, expensively, that fully automated releases could green-light a car with a loose wheel.
Even the driver’s part is engineered. Stop position, clutch engagement, and pit-limiter discipline are all rehearsed, and much of it is managed through controls on the steering wheel, which the driver operates while stationary for under two seconds and under instruction not to creep.
When it goes wrong
The failure modes are well known precisely because the sport has cataloged them: cross-threaded nuts, a car released into the path of another, a jack that does not drop. The FIA’s response has been characteristically procedural — minimum reaction times built into the release systems, penalties for unsafe releases, and a steady tightening of wheel-retention rules. The two-second stop survives, but with margin deliberately legislated back into it.
What two seconds buys
A pit stop gains or loses a race in a way no single corner can. Twenty seconds of pit-lane transit is fixed; the stationary time is the only part a team controls, and the difference between 1.9 and 2.9 is the difference between emerging ahead of a rival or behind. That is why teams rehearse a maneuver they may execute perfectly only thirty times a year. The fastest pit stops in F1 history are not stunts. They are the most condensed expression the sport has of a simple idea — that everything, absolutely everything, can be trained.
